Expanding Mobility and Access through Autonomous Transit
Mark begins by explaining Intel Capital’s investment in Beep, highlighting Intel’s history with autonomous transportation through Mobileye. Intel Capital was particularly drawn to Beep’s mission of bringing autonomous transportation to underserved markets.
Joe emphasizes Beep’s goal of addressing micro transit deserts in the U.S., caused by a shortage of drivers and reductions in public transit services. Beep’s system keeps humans involved to ensure continuity and passenger safety. Kevin mentions that Beep vehicles comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and notes that some states are starting to change policies to accommodate autonomous driving. Joe and Kevin highlight Beep’s sophisticated autonomous driving systems, its focus on public transit over any-to-any approaches, and its operation in geo-fenced areas with managed routes and controlled speeds.
Beep’s Impact on Communities and Society
Joe believes that microtransit services like Beep’s, operating in controlled environments, will be adopted and scaled more quickly than more complex solutions. He discusses challenges such as integrating autonomous transportation into existing public transit systems, coordinating with bus services, providing both on-demand and scheduled services, and effectively communicating with passengers.
Beep operates in communities such as Orlando’s Lake Nona area, downtown Orlando, Jacksonville, Florida and Honolulu, Hawaii. Joe notes that their solutions are already transforming mobility in these areas and stresses the importance of community engagement, including training first responders to handle their vehicles in emergencies.
Joe and Kevin discuss the broad societal impacts of Beep’s autonomous transportation, particularly for seniors, disabled individuals, and residents of underserved areas. Kevin shares that Beep’s inspiration came from his father, who was passionate about mobility access and involved in Beep’s early development.
Advancing Safety and Service with Cybersecurity and AI
Camille inquires about Beep’s use of cybersecurity and AI. Joe explains that Beep is fundamentally a technology company, adhering to stringent security requirements and integrating a remote command and control environment as a form of tele-assist to the autonomous system. Kevin adds that multiple backups, including physical sensors, ensure vehicles do not make unsafe maneuvers and have an onboard emergency stop capability.
Kevin details how Beep employs AI models for training and real-time driving decisions, integrating AI with cameras and traffic systems. By leveraging AI and computer vision, Beep can detect problems and take safe, immediate actions.
